Writing about a special place in Maine, just 30 miles north of the end of
The Appalachian Trail
Writing "The Pond" Book
Sandra Newman grew up in the small northern Maine town of Island Falls living in town from October to May as a town kid. In the summer, she moved with her Mom, Dad and sisters to camp and became a “pond Kid” swimming in the wicked-cold water of Pleasant Pond along with her many friends, enjoying leisurely, fun-filled summer days.
Rarely seen out of swimsuits, except for sleeping or the occasional trip to town, surviving on macaroni salads, water-skiing and sunshine, what more could “Pond kids” ask for or need?
Sandy would return each summer to swim, kayak and attempt a game of golf with her many lifelong friends.
After spending 20 years as a professor teaching Fashion Art in Boston, Massachusetts she moved to New Mexico. While living in New Mexico, working as a tour director and Rocky Mountain Ski Instructor, she discovered storytelling: entertaining eager listeners with sharp, witted stories about her hometown of Island Falls, the town’s local residents, and life on the pond.
When a friend, whose family was among the first settlers on Pleasant Pond, asked her to tell his story, she happily agreed. It was while kayaking on Pleasant Pond, she realized there were many “Pond” stories to tell, and Life and Times on Pleasant Pond was started.
Thank you all my friends who contributed to my book.
